Learn about your town: Tinley Park, IL

Located just 45 mins outside of Chicago, IL, you will find the town of Tinley Park, IL, which became a permanent settlement in the 1830s. However, it was not always called Tinley Park; it was initially called Bremen which honored the town’s German roots, according to the city website.

The railroad community within the town was very beneficial for the economy and what gave way to its current namesake. In 1890, the town became Tinley Park in honor of the community's first railroad station agent, Samuel Tinley Sr. 

Tinley’s historical roots can still be felt throughout the main downtown area of the community, with the historical society and many other historical buildings. 

For example, J.W Holsteins Saloon was opened in 1868 and offered lodging in the upper level of their original location. In 1890, Holsteins moved to its current location next to the train tracks and it is still open and a fun stop on a bar crawl down Oak Park Avenue today! Tinley is recognized as home to five of the Indianapolis 500 drivers, including Tony Bettenhausen, who is a key figure in the Tinley Park community today. He is the namesake for the recreation center and a car dealership.

Tinley Park is also home to the very popular White Water Canyon Water Park.From modern spots like the sip. wine bar. to the old fashioned saloons that adorn the downtown, Tinley Park, IL is a great place for history and for families.
