Lockport had its first permanent settler in 1830, and from there the town located along the canal thrived. The city owes a lot of its success to the canal being such a central and popular area to create businesses and a place that brings lots of natural business. 

Chief Engineer William Gooding was working to complete the Illinois and Michigan, or I and M, Canal when he realized this area was 40 feet higher than Joliet. This meant this would be great for water-based power. In 1937, he began construction and created a canal headquarter in the town. The Illinois and Michigan Canal Commission named the town Lockport during this time as well, according to the City of Lockport site.

Lockport grew and grew as businesses popped up in the downtown area and it was actually coined “the city that made Chicago famous.” This is because it provided a direct waterlink to the great lakes and the Mississippi River. 

Today, Lockport, IL is just as booming and busy!
